Many outpost railroad stations were not always furnished first class as the tattered window shade will attest. In Utah many of the Mormon telegraph operators worked out of their homes located near by the railroad tracks. Also experienced women operators ran telegraphic schools from their homes training girls as young as 15 years old to be telegraph operators, while tending to their other numerous family duties.
